Yesterday, April 28, 2025, Spain suffered a massive power outage that affected a large part of the country. The incident occurred at 12:33 PM (local time) when a sudden loss of 15 gigawatts of power generation (approximately 60% of national supply) took place. This collapse disconnected Spain’s power grid from the rest of Europe and left millions of citizens without electricity.
At our data center in Spain, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems were automatically activated at 12:33 PM, keeping all infrastructure operating normally at first. However, two brief incidents occurred later in the day, detailed below:
-
12:33 PM – External power supply outage. Our UPS systems maintained full load, ensuring all services remained online without interruption.
-
2:55 PM – 3:32 PM – Brief service interruption. After almost four hours operating under UPS, battery levels dropped to ~20%, and the load transfer to backup generators began. During this switch, a failure in Red Eléctrica’s isolators caused a momentary voltage drop, which temporarily shut down all servers. Our technical team fully restored services by 3:32 PM, with servers now powered by the generators.
-
8:09 PM – 9:15 PM – External connectivity loss. The Interxion data center (where our anti-DDoS provider is located) completely isolated itself, disconnecting all external routes. As a result, our anti-DDoS provider lost connectivity, which rendered the DDoS mitigation tunnel inoperative and caused a temporary loss of connectivity. Full connectivity was restored at 9:15 PM when Interxion re-established external links.
Currently, all systems are operating normally. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to our clients and thank you for your understanding during this incident. At Hostealo, we reaffirm our strong commitment to service quality and are taking steps to further strengthen our infrastructure to prevent extraordinary events like this from impacting our services in the future.
